Measuring Distance in
SAPPHIRE™ Structure

Finding a distance between two structural members or points of interest in a model is fast, easy and accurate with the Tape Measure tool in SAPPHIRE Structure.  Whether you need to find an odd spacing between trusses or the maximum height of the structural frame above the foundation, the Tape Measure tool allows you to leverage the high fidelity BIM model to get what you need.  The Tape Measure tool allows distances to be measured in Plan, Elevation and Solid Views.  The following is a quick rundown of how to begin leveraging the Tape Measure tool in SAPPHIRE Structure.

Measuring in Plan or Elevation Views

To measuring a distance in Plan or an Elevation View simply:

1.       Activate the Tape Measure command:

·         From the Dimension Toolbar

OR

·         From the Dimension dropdown menu

2.       Move the cursor to the location the measurement is desired to start from (enable object snaps to ensure accuracy).

3.       Left click to select the starting point for the measurement.  Once a starting point is selected, the horizontal, vertical and point to point distances between the starting point and the cursor location are dynamically calculated and displayed in the status bar.  The angle of the line that connects the two points with respect to the horizontal axis of the plan is also displayed.  To display the distances dynamically in the active plan or elevation view window, enable the Heads Up Display option.

4.       Simply hover the cursor over the desired ending point for the measurement (enable object snaps to ensure accuracy) and read the desired distance.  You are then able to move the cursor to a new ending point location or left click on a point to select a new starting point for a measurement.

Measuring in a 3D Solid View

Often times the distance that is needed is required to be measured in the three dimensional space instead of simply a two dimensional space.  To display distances in the three dimensional space of a Solid View simply:

1.       Activate the Tape Measure command:

·         From the Dimension Toolbar

OR

·         From the Dimension dropdown menu

2.       Move the cursor to the desired start location of the measurement.  Selection points will highlight when the cursor is located close to valid points in the model.

Example:

3.       Left click when the desired starting point is highlighted.

4.       Move the cursor near the desired point to be measured to.  The Tape Measure will snap to valid selection points (end points of members) as the cursor moves close to one.  The system will display the distances between the two active points in the Solid View window as the cursor moves from one ending point to another in the model.  The reported measurements will include distances based on the orthogonal axes of the job (such as the X axis, Y axis and Z axis as well as point to point).
