Recommended Computer Systems and Peripherals

The MiTek Suite of Software will run satisfactorily using a PC that meets our Minimum System requirements; however most users today tend to multi-task. Multi-task users often use dual monitors and run several applications at a time. It is not unusual to see three, four or more applications open and running on a designers system. Keeping this in mind, the following recommendations are based on the computers that we purchase for our users at MiTek. Engineers, Developers and Testers tend to run the most robust systems. Designers probably need systems with similar specifications however users that do not use MBA, Engineering, eFrame, TrussFramer, Sapphire Structure and Cad applications may not need the extra power. Users that run general office applications, such as Microsoft Office, Acrobat, and some of our support programs may not need the extra power.

Given the importance factor of the MiTek software, doing everything possible to eliminate potential problems is prudent and recommended. That is why MiTek has chosen Dell as our primary source for computers. Dell has consistently proven to be a leader in quality, reliability, support and value. Buying a computer directly from the manufacturer ensures that you are getting newer technology that is built to order. Additionally, you can create software specifications and images to deploy only the software needed to run your business. Off the shelf computers tend to be loaded with consumer oriented applications that may not suite the needs of your business and may interfere with your primary applications.

The sample systems displayed below are representative of the units that we purchase for our MiTek users. These systems are subject to change as the technology changes and we will update this page periodically. Your choice of a system should be based on the overall needs of your users. Using MiTek‚Äôs minimum standards as a baseline and our representative systems as an upper end will provide you some pricing latitude. Dell makes several different models of computers and our choices are based on a three year life cycle with models that remain very consistent with their construction and components. The Dell Dimension Desktop and Dell Inspiron Laptops are most often seen in their marketing campaigns. These units tend to change from month to month as to what components are included and what pricing packages are offered.

Dell Precision Desktop and Dell Precision Laptops are much more consistent in their offerings and considered a true business computer Vs. Dimension and Inspiron which are considered consumer oriented models. As with Dell, you will find that other manufactures have the same type of criteria and you will likely find two distinct lines that differentiate between business and consumer use. Consider all of your software needs prior to purchasing your equipment. It is usually less expensive to buy software bundled with the computer than it is to buy it off the shelf. Additionally it will be preinstalled and ready to run. Consider if you have a need for a Suite of Office Applications, Anti Virus Software, Spam Blocking and Anti Spyware when calculating your overall costs. Additionally, carefully evaluate your service needs, the cost of additional warranty upfront could more than pay for itself down the road. A broken system could cripple your productivity. If you do not have in house IT staff, consider paying extra for On-Site Service.
